Overnight ramp and lane closures are expected this week at the Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange in Louisville. Contract crews will continue preparations for temporary ramp widening to assist in easing congestion ahead of the I-65 closure this summer as part of the I-65 Central Corridor project.
Drivers can expect the following overnight restrictions:
Monday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 21 | 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Ramp from northbound I-65 to eastbound I-264 closed
- Preston Highway to eastbound I-264 on ramp (near Durrett Lane) closed
Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23 | 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Southbound I-65 lane closure between westbound I-264 (Exit 131B at milepoint 131.2) and the on ramp to eastbound I-264 (milepoint 130.3)
- Eastbound I-264 lane closure at ramp to southbound I-65
- Westbound I-264 lane shift at ramp to southbound I-65
No closures are scheduled April 24 through May 3for Kentucky Derby events.
Drivers should stay alert, watch for signage, and slow down in work zones. Map apps like Waze account for closures and guide drivers along the most efficient route at the time of travel.
What to Expect This Summer
Five miles of I-65 are scheduled to close between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville (Jefferson Street) early on Monday, June 1. It’s expected to reopen to traffic on Saturday, Aug. 1.
During the closure, through traffic will be detoured to I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) on the west side of Louisville. The signed detour route is the shortest distance, utilizes roadways with the most available capacity, and creates the least traffic impacts.
With the closure, crews are able to address three bridges in need of immediate improvements as quickly as possible, including replacing I-65 bridges over Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds.
St. Catherine Ramp Closure
The ramp from southbound I-65 to east St. Catherine Street (Exit 135) is anticipated to close on or after early Monday, May 4.
The exit ramp is part of adjacent work to replace the I-65 bridge over Kentucky and Brook streets. The ramp is expected to reopen late this year.
