Five-mile section of I-65 to reopen early Wednesday, July 29

Drivers can expect work to begin around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28 in advance of the reopening of a five-mile section of Interstate 65 as part of the I-65 Central Corridor project. Contract crews will complete final striping and overhead sign updates to reopen I-65 between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and downtown Louisville. I-65 is expected to reopen to two lanes of traffic in each direction very early Wednesday, July 29.

The reopening of I-65 includes the reopening of several ramps, including access from northbound I-65 to the Fair/Expo Center (Exit 131-B), eastbound I-264 access to the Fair/Expo Center Main Gate, and the Bank Street on-ramp to westbound I-264/I-64.

Some ramps are closed as construction continues along the corridor.

Around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, crews will begin two short-term closures to complete striping and to move barrier wall. Access to westbound Interstate 264 is expected to close for about an hour and access to eastbound I-264 will then close for about an hour. Signed detours will be in place during the temporary I-264 closures. Airport access will remain open. For drivers on northbound I-65 traveling to the airport, the signed detour will take them to eastbound I-264 to Newburg Road to westbound I-264 and to the airport.

What to Expect

A construction speed limit of 40 miles per hour will be in place along I-65 for most of the five-mile corridor. A construction speed limit of 45 miles per hour will be in place along southbound I-65 from past the Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue bridge through the I-264/I-65 interchange.

With lane restrictions in place on I-65, drivers traveling through Louisville are encouraged to use the signed detour via I-264 (Georgia Davis Powers Expressway) to the west side to avoid construction delays. Drivers with destinations in Louisville should use mapping apps to find the best route at their time of travel.
