As part of the I-65 Central Corridor Project, the postponed August temporary closure of Broadway under I-65 is expected to be in place by early Saturday, Sept. 12. Several adjustments were made to improve traffic flow with the long-term detours in place at Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street and adjustments were also made for the Broadway work, including the planned detour, additional signal coordination, and added signage to help traffic flow as efficiently as possible during the work.
Crews will begin the work needed to close Broadway under I-65 overnight on Friday and the short-term closure is expected to be in place by early Saturday morning. Broadway is expected to reopen in early October. During the traffic restriction, crews will demolish the overpass at Broadway. The nearby section of Gray Street under I-65 will also be closed to traffic but remain open for pedestrian access. Both are expected to reopen in early October. A signed detour will be in place.
Accessing Downtown/Hospitals
Drivers exiting northbound I-65 at Broadway (Exit 136 A) who are not accessing LOUMED facilities (downtown hospitals, JCTC, and others) should turn right and go east on Broadway. Clay Street can be used to travel north into downtown. Drivers with destinations outside the downtown medical district are advised to use alternate routes and to avoid the nearby sections of Brook, Floyd and Chestnut streets. Access remains open to all downtown hospitals.
Additional dedicated turning and through lanes have been added through restriping. Signal timing has been adjusted to allow more “green time” to improve traffic flow along the signed detour route, and additional message boards and signage give drivers more notice of the closure and direct traffic away from congested areas.
Mapping apps will guide drivers to the best route at their time of travel.
