TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Overnight Ramp Closures, Lane Reductions on I-65 Continue Next Week

Beginning on Sunday evening, month-long ramp and lane closures on I-65 will begin to advance the construction schedule near Brook Street. The ramp and lane closures are necessary for contract crews to perform micropiling work, a process in which crews will drill micropiles into the ground and grout them in place to provide enhanced stability and load-bearing capacity for the new Kentucky Street/Brook Street bridge.

The month-long traffic impacts beginning this weekend on I-65 for barrier wall placement, temporary striping, and new foundation installation include:

Beginning Sunday, March 1

  • I-65 South will be reduced from three lanes to one lane just south of ‘Spaghetti Junction’ from 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, until 6 a.m. on Monday, March 2, at which time it will reopen to two lanes during daytime hours through Wednesday, April 1.
  • I-65 South will be reduced from two lanes to one lane just south of ‘Spaghetti Junction’ from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night through Wednesday, April 1, for foundation work at the new Kentucky Street/Brook Street bridge.
  • The I-65 South off-ramp to East St. Catherine Street (Exit 135) will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, and will reopen on Wednesday, April 1.
  • The I-65 South on-ramp from South First Street near East Chestnut Street will be closed from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night.

Earlier this month, crews began widening and restriping I-264 ramps to increase capacity and improve merge operations along the detour route. This work is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted signage and allow additional travel time while this work is underway. A complete list of all current traffic alerts is available at i65centralcorridor.com. All construction schedules are weather-dependent.

ABOUT THE I-65 CENTRAL CORRIDOR PROJECT:
Announced last year, five miles of Interstate 65 between Jefferson Street and Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) will be closed June through July 2026, to replace three aging bridges as part of the two-year Central Corridor project to improve safety and travel along I-65 in Louisville. During this closure, I-65 traffic will be detoured using I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and Interstate 64, while on-ramps at Jefferson Street and Liberty Street/Muhammad Ali Boulevard will remain open.

While construction on the Central Corridor project will continue over the next two years, this summer’s temporary closure of I-65 will allow crews to complete a portion of the work more efficiently, reducing the overall construction timeline while improving long-term safety and reliability along the corridor.

The I-65 Central Corridor Project is one of several state highway improvement initiatives in the Louisville Metro area that will enhance the safety and efficiency of roads and bridges to improve travel, increase commerce and support connections for future growth. This project is focused on replacing multiple bridges along the corridor between Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) and downtown Louisville. Construction will continue into mid-2027 and through 2028 as additional bridges are added to the project.

The schedule for this work is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
